Out of hospital births have seen a gradual rise in numbers since 2004.  The CDC reports that the number of home births has risen 3 percent from 2004 to 2006.  A variety of factors have influenced women’s decision making.  Some mothers may prefer to be in the comfort of their own home surrounded by friends and family.  Cultural and religious concerns as well as access to hospitals in rural areas all play a role in the decision to perform home birth.
